Defining Your ‘Why’

One of the toughest parts of coming up with a marketing strategy is defining your ‘why’. Your ‘why’ is a combination of what makes you different and who you are marketing to. It is the reason that you are doing what you do. Your ‘why’ will be the thing to help you identify the market gap you are looking for and allow you to fill it with the proper marketing of your product.

Why This?

When defining your ‘why’ one of the most important questions to ask yourself is; why this? Why am I doing what I am doing? If you are able to understand the reasoning behind your brand, then you can better relay that message to your audience. Remember, there are very few innovative ideas in today’s day and age, only innovative differences. By finding the reason that you are different than the other brands in your market, you can better define your ‘why’ and let your audience know why your brand is the right choice.

Why Them?

Know who you are speaking to and know why you are speaking to them. All products were not created equal and therefore all products cannot be sold to everyone. Your product needs a target audience and you need to know who and why they are who they are. Ask yourself; why them? What makes them different? How will my product improve their lives? By identifying the reasoning behind your target audience, you can better ensure that when marketing, you are speaking their language.

There are so many ways to connect with people today that there doesn’t seem to be one right answer. Marketing, advertising and sales are all great options for relaying messages and often work strongly together. But you chose marketing. Why? The way you choose to reach your audience should have everything to do with your ‘why’. Knowing what you’re selling and who you’re selling to, helps you to know how to sell to them.
